A properly installed irrigation system whether it is drip or spray can provide similar results.
Each system has its advantages and disadvantages.
Sprinkler/Spray System:
Sprinklers/Spray can soak widespread areas with less pipework
required at initial installation time.
Sprinkler/Spray systems have been subjected to bans during
droughts in Melbourne during this time many people converted existing systems
to a drip system.
Sprinklers/Spray will wet some foliage of plants this assists in
keeping them clean and fresh looking. Dust can build up on foliage of plants
becoming unsightly a spray system can reduce this.
Sprinkler/Spray systems can be adversely affected at high wind
times.
Drip System:
A drip system is better suited to some plants where wetting of
foliage can result in spreading of disease such as petal blight on Azaleas or
blackspot on Roses.
Drip systems are generally much easier to hide as 13mm pipes can
be placed below the surface or on soil surface and covered with mulch.
Pressure drops in a system are less noticeable with a drip
system and can be hard to detect. A leak in the system with a sprinkler/spray
system it is much more noticeable.
Drip systems are not as affected by wind and by virtue of
dripping under mulch, less evaporation with occur on those very hot and windy days.
A drip system needs more pipework and is harder to install as its
coverage is only around 200-300mm from the “drips”.
A pressure reducer is required on most drip systems.
Run off is less likely with a drip system.
Which is best?
Personally we prefer drip systems where possible due to better
efficiency, that is, using less water. However there certainly are times when a
spray system or combination system is better. Sorry but the answer really
depends on the gardens circumstances, your budget (spray systems are cheaper) and
in some case just the preference of the garden owner, some people enjoying hear
the spray system at work.
Regardless we usually provide you with 2 quotes covering each
type of system.
